Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

I love all sorts of different music. I grew up mostly listening to 90s alternative on the radio, and while I still get a little nostalgic over the stuff I haven't heard of in a while, Beck and The Smashing Pumpkins are the two bands from that era that I still listen to regularly and enjoy. When I was about 14 I figured out how to use my old man's record player, and listened to a bunch the music that he listened to when he was young and foolish - Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who. It made most of the stuff I'd been listening to on the radio seem pretty watered down.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

It wasn't until the first time I listened to Dark Side of the Moon that I understood that an album can be greater than the sum its tracks. I had heard a Floyd song or two on the radio, but hearing one Floyd track on the radio is like just hearing a small snippet of a conversation -- with an album, you can create a context for a song. Almost every time I turn some music on, I either play a whole album, or I play some sort of last.fm mix. I'm still not settled on which cloud service suits me best, but for the time being I've been using Google Music to sync my library with the cloud. If it had a better mobile web player and better auto-tagging features it would be perfect, but I'm hoping at for at least an iPhone app and a greasemonkey auto-tagging script.

Aphex Twin - Ventolin EP

So these days I listen to all sorts of stuff -- I still have roots in 90s alternative, but I stray into lots of different types of modern rock, prog-rock, and a little metal when the mood strikes me. I listen to some electronic stuff, Aphex Twin has long been one of my favorites, though I also listen to more mainstream artists like Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold. I like a little dash of hip-hop here and there, but usually I prefer songs that are more socially-relevant than the pop-hop type of thing you hear on the radio these days. Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, and Mos Def are probably my favorite hip-hop artists.
